Giorgio Magnanensi is a composer, musician and conductor of great talent and one of the
most interesting personalities of the Italian generation. – Franco Donatoni

Aventa welcomes the acclaimed Vancouver composer Giorgio Magnanensi as
guest conductor and curator for this event. In curating Tracce e Palinsesti,
Magnanensi pays homage to three Italian composers who continue to influence
and inspire his work and activity.

Magnanensi envisions the evening as a continuous flow of music, live electronics and video.
The audience will be immersed in the theatrical quality of sound, performance gesture
and sound figures that emerge within the flow of variable sonic landscapes. Works are
interlocked through the use of sound panels, transitions and resonances, which coalesce
to inspire the creation of Magnenensi’s new work, TDU XX.

Soprano Anne Grimm joins Aventa in the premiere of New Zealand composer
Eve de Castro-Robinson’s “Quiet at her window and Juliet Palmer’s “American Woman”.
Inspired by the special relationships created by Aventa’s appearance at the
University of Auckland (NZ) in 2015, this concert feature the works of New Zealand
composers Leonie Holmes and Eve de Castro-Robinson. These composers, joined by
Toronto composer and University of Auckland alumna, Juliet Palmer, have left an
indelible impression on our organization.

Aventa’s percussionist extraordinaire Corey Rae brings Juliet Palmer’s “The Truth and the Truth”
to Victoria audiences, in an evening of music from Canadian and New Zealand composers.
Juliet writes of “The Truth and the Truth”: “While visiting Toronto’s historic Fort York,
I learned that musicians had collected the wounded and corpses from the battlefield.
Those least responsible for the violence were the ones most intimately acquainted
with its effects. Exploring the traditions of military drumming as a form of signalling
and communication, I began to look at how messages about war in our own time are
shared and/or withheld. The snare drum part is based on speech rhythms and military
drumming techniques.

Hornist, Darnell Linwood, joins Aventa in the Canadian premiere of Tristan Murail’s
concerto for horn and ensemble,Mémoire/Erosion.  A tour-de-force finale to our 2015/16 season,
this concert intertwines the eclectic sound world of Victoria composer Christopher Butterfield
alongside Murail’s inimitable horn concerto and Bent Sørensen’s unworldly, ghost-like music,
creating an experience to be savoured.
