Corey Rae is currently the Principal Percussionist with the Victoria Symphony. Before he began playing with the Symphony he attended the University of Victoria and then the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he studied with John Rudolph and David Kent. In 2008, Corey began playing with Aventa, a new music ensemble based in Victoria. This was his introduction to contemporary music and his continued relationship with Aventa has fostered a passion for the genre. He has played with this ensemble in New York, Munich, and Copenhagan, as well as various cities across Canada. In 2011/12 Corey worked closely with English composer Michael Finnissy in Aventa’s composers workshops. In June, 2010, Corey completed a residency at the Banff Centre with Aventa, working on an opera based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Here he worked closely with English composer Gavin Bryars and Faroese singer Eivør Palsdottir. During the summers of 2008 and 2009, Corey played with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
